An Epic Ha Long Bay Tour

After some serious bargaining at our hostel, we manage to secure a full-day boat tour at such a low price that we are practically sworn to secrecy about what we paid.

The adventure begins with a visit to a vast, almost psychedelic cave. Inside, the rock formations twist and rise dramatically, illuminated by colorful lights that give the whole place a surreal atmosphere. It feels like stepping into another world before we even reach the open water.

And then — the bay itself.

We are incredibly lucky with the weather. For this time of year in northern Vietnam, clear skies are far from guaranteed. Yet we find ourselves sailing under bright sunshine, surrounded by the iconic limestone karsts rising steeply from the emerald water.

We glide between the towering cliffs, cameras constantly clicking, trying to capture the scale and beauty of the landscape. Each turn reveals another postcard-perfect view. And then another. And another. No matter how many photos we take, it feels impossible to fully fit those dramatic rock formations onto a memory card.

At one point, I get the chance to go kayaking — easily one of the highlights of the day. Paddling quietly between the cliffs, so close to the water and the stone walls, makes the experience feel even more immersive.

Later, we stop at a floating platform where various mollusks are being sold straight from the sea. Soon enough, those same shellfish are served to us as a fresh meal. Sitting there, eating seafood in the middle of Ha Long Bay, feels both simple and extraordinary.

Our boat then anchors near a beach where we can swim and sunbathe. The water is refreshing, the sand warm — a perfect pause in the middle of an already remarkable day.

On the way back, I sit on deck and chat with an older engineer from Moscow, who shares his view that Putin has brought stability to Russia. The contrast between our surroundings — peaceful waters and golden afternoon light — and the heavy political conversation is striking.

After the tour, we return happily to our hotel. Soon, an overcrowded minibus picks us up, and we begin the journey to the final destination of our trip: Vietnam’s capital, Hanoi.

An epic day on the water — nature at its most dramatic, moments of adventure, unexpected conversations, and the feeling that some landscapes truly live up to the hype.
