A Boat Ride (and Marek Falls In)

Near our hotel, a sawmill hums steadily — a reminder that everyday working life continues alongside the tourist routes. But our focus today is Tam Coc, which translates as “Three Caves” — a scenic boat ride along a winding river near Ninh Binh.

The setting is spectacular. Limestone karst formations rise dramatically from flat rice fields and calm waters, their rounded shapes giving the landscape its distinctive look. These almost egg-shaped mountains are precisely why so many locals — and foreign tourists — are drawn here.

At the same time, signs of rapid development are everywhere. Real estate construction seems to be booming, almost reminiscent of Estonia back in 2006 — ambitious projects rising quickly amid the natural beauty.

As we glide along the river, we can’t help but look pleased with ourselves. The weather is good, the mood relaxed, and the scenery does most of the talking. The boat takes us gently through caves carved into the rock, low ceilings forcing us to duck as we pass through.

At some point, Marek decides to take control of the situation. Confidently assuming command of the boat, he embraces his role — captain for a moment.

And then promptly falls into the water.

Fortunately, the boat stays upright. Marek emerges wet but laughing. His phone, thankfully, is waterproof. Crisis avoided. Dignity slightly compromised — but spirits high.

One thing we did not manage, however, was to row the boat uphill. The towering limestone cliffs remain unconquered.

It’s a day that perfectly combines natural beauty, light adventure, and a reminder that even the calmest boat rides can take an unexpected turn.
